— Construction of the Western Wake Freeway will cause detours for drivers in southwest Apex in the coming months. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority is building a bypass of about 12 miles from Interstate 540 in Research Triangle Park to connect with N.C. Highway 55 near Holly Springs.

Work on the route will close South Salem Street (Old U.S. Highway 1) between Kelly Road and Apex Barbecue Road for 10 months beginning on Wednesday.

The Western Wake Freeway makes up the bulk of the Triangle Expressway project, a toll road which will connect Durham County at N.C. 147 south to Holly Springs. This leg of the project is scheduled to be complete in 2012.

Traffic in Apex will be re-routed while South Salem Street is closed.

"timbo - you have abviously never been to south Jersey"

I have, but perhaps you misunderstood my comment. It is saying we in NC are doing the same things that the rustbelt and other northern states did, which caused all those people to move down here to get away from it all.

Perhaps I should say "the New Jersey of the South".

"The options remain for taking the same roads we've always had."-Semperfi

Actually, that is not correct. They are closing the exit from 147/Durham Freeway onto T.W. Alexander so they can drive more people onto toll roads.

"These roads need tolls over the entire streach-yesterday. USe the money from the North side to buy the south side. I'll bet someone has problems with that. Just watch and see!!"

I don't have a problem with that since I will be using the recently improved but not tolled I-40 instead. What I don't understand is why people are still suggesting the whole loop be tolled when that ship sailed years ago. It ain't going to happen.

We are hardly turning into South Jersey... A toll road is simple - if you want to drive on it, then be ok to pay. If you don't want to pay, then don't. The options remain for taking the same roads we've always had... I actually think the other part of 540 should also be tolled to make it equal...

I'd be suprised if the toll is ever removed....and if it is it won't be for like 30 or 40 years....by which point folks will be so used to the tolls they'll be complacent

You guys may complain-the S-E leg may never get built!! It took 18 years from concept to complete for the Clayton By-Pass-patially because of this same snail causing issues for 540!!
Costs only tripled in that 18 years-that's all.

Concerning tolls-if 1 mile is toll-every mile should be toll. N Raleigh has no leg to stand on-oh-Federal Law says they can't charge. Well guess what-federal law gets changed every day. That's why Congress is there-to work FOR US!! Certainly, some think Congress is there for them (Nancy, Barney, Harry, Bob E-all think they're there for them)and not us. Guess what-YOU'RE WRONG!!!

These roads need tolls over the entire streach-yesterday. USe the money from the North side to buy the south side. I'll bet someone has problems with that. Just watch and see!!

I travel from Morrisville to Holly Springs quite frequently. Sure, there's traffic, but there's traffic everywhere. 55 will suit me just fine. I'm just hoping there's enough people willing to pay the toll so it frees up 55!

  • Not_So_Dumb May 24, 2011

"i live in holly springs, use 55 all the time. i don't mind paying a toll until the road is payed for."-m0nky

Problem is that tolls usually don't disappear when the road is paid for.
