RALEIGH, N.C. — A portion of U.S. Highway 1 South in Wake County will be closed Thursday, Friday and Monday nights, the North Carolina Department of Transportation said

The road will be closed between N.C. Highway 55 and New Hill Holleman Road so a contractor for the Western Wake Freeway project can install bridge beams over the highway.

The closure will last from midnight until 6 a.m. each night, weather permitting.

The highway work includes removing a temporary barrier wall, positioning cranes in the lanes and placing six bridge beams over the road.

Drivers on U.S. 1 South traffic will be detoured onto westbound N.C. 55 (exit 95), then directed to turn left onto South Salem Street (Old U.S. 1), and then left onto New Hill Holleman Road to get back on U.S. 1.
