DOT releases road project rankings
North Carolina's road construction agency has taken a first step toward deciding which projects are built based more on objective standards and less on politics.

A five-year draft construction schedule will be developed based on the scores. Many projects won't appear on the plan because of financial constraints, environmental concerns and other obstacles.
DOT officials say the projects to be built between 2015 and 2020 would cost roughly $54 billion. Officials, though, estimated that DOT will have less than $11 billion to work with for that period.
People will be allowed to comment before the plan is approved in June 2011.
Upcoming public forums are scheduled at:
- Feb. 22, Alamance Community College's auditorium, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m.
- Feb. 23, Catawba Valley Community College's auditorium, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m.
- Feb. 24, Global TransPark Center's training auditorium (Room 142), 10 a.m. - noon.
Gov. Beverly Perdue ordered changes after complaints that wheeling and dealing by board members allowed some bad projects to get built.
