Stimulus to finance $48M in highway projects
The state DOT has used $48.6 million in federal stimulus money in awarding eight contracts for highway projects.

“These additional recovery projects will provide more new opportunities for companies and communities across North Carolina,” Transportation Secretary Gene Conti said in a statement. “Once again, bids came in well below our estimates, which will allow us to stretch our dollars even further than originally anticipated.”
The bids received on the economic recovery projects came in more than 17 percent, or about $10.2 million, below DOT estimates, Conti said. Work on all contracts will start in early to mid-June.
The following projects are included:
- Resurfacing and shoulder construction along 5.6 miles of the Interstate 440 Beltline between Wake Forest Road and Wade Avenue in Raleigh. The project includes work on the ramps at the Six Forks Road, Glenwood Avenue and Lake Boone Trail exits. The $3.6 million contract was awarded to Rea Contracting LLC of Charlotte. Work is scheduled to begin as early as June 1 and be completed by Oct. 30. Work will be done at night, with no lane closures on the Beltline or its ramps between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Those restrictions will be expanded during the State Fair and other major events held at the RBC Center, Carter-Finley Stadium and the State Fairgrounds.
- Resurfacing nearly 12 miles of U.S. Highway 64 from the U.S. 64/264 Bypass in Wake and Franklin counties to the Nash County line and three miles of U.S. Highway 264 from the U.S. 264/64 split in Zebulon to the Nash County line. The $5.8 million contract was awarded to S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson. Work is scheduled to begin as early as June 1 and be completed by Nov. 1.
- Constructing the 2.3-mile Booker Dairy Road Extension in Smithfield from Buffalo Road to U.S. Highway 70. The $14.3 million contract was awarded to S.T. Wooten. Work is set to start as early as June 1, with completion no later than Dec. 31, 2011.
- Resurfacing 20.9 miles of Interstate 40 from mile marker 348.5 in Sampson County to mile marker 369.4 in Duplin County. The $12.7 million contract was awarded to Barnhill Contracting Co. of Tarboro. Work is scheduled to begin as early as June 8, with completion no later than Nov. 15, 2010.
Other DOT contracts awarded recently include the following area projects:
- Resurfacing and shoulder construction along a 6.8-mile stretch of I-40 between the Wade Avenue interchange and just east of Interstate 540, as well Wade Avenue between I-40 and the Edwards Mill Road bridge and the ramps at Wade Avenue, Airport Boulevard and Aviation Parkway. The $6 million contract was awarded to Rea Contracting. Work is scheduled to begin as early as June 1 and be completed by May 22, 2010.
- Resurfacing a 1.4-mile stretch of N.C. Highway 24 in Clinton from west of Airport Road to U.S. Highway 421. The $852,912 contract was awarded to Barnhill Contracting. Work is scheduled to start as early as June 8, and completion will be no later than Nov. 20. The work will be done at night with no lane closures allowed on I-40, its ramps or Wade Avenue between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. The closure restrictions will be expanded until midnight during the State Fair, with expanded hours as well for football games at Carter-Finley Stadium and special events at the stadium, RBC Center and the State Fairgrounds.
- Replacing the bridge on Manson-Axtell Road over Fishing Creek in Warren County. The $693,500 contract was awarded to Atwell Construction Co. of Greenville. Work is scheduled to begin as early as June 1, with completion by Dec. 31.
