Construction begins on Goldsboro Bypass
The state Department of Transportation broke ground Thursday on the first phase of the U.S. Highway 70 Goldsboro Bypass.

The $65.5 million, 3.9-mile section of four-lane highway will run from west of Interstate 795 to east of Wayne Memorial Drive. The project includes interchanges at I-795, old U.S. Highway 117 and Wayne Memorial Drive.
“The Goldsboro Bypass will help improve travel along U.S. 70 and is part of the department’s efforts to upgrade the entire corridor between Raleigh and Morehead City,” DOT Chief Operating Officer Dan DeVane said in a statement. “It will reduce travel time and offer greater mobility for motorists.”
The contract was awarded to Barnhill Construction Co., and the highway is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2011.
The DOT is working to acquire right of way for the three remaining sections of the bypass, which will eventually stretch from west of N.C.Highway 581 in Wayne County to Promise Land Road in Lenoir County.
