LUMBERTON, N.C. — The state Department of Transportation on Friday officially opened a $100 million section of Interstate 74 in Robeson County.

The 13-mile stretch links N.C. Highway 710 near Pembroke to N.C. Highway 41 in Lumberton.

I-74, which will eventually connect Michigan to South Carolina, serves as one of DOT’s Strategic Highway Corridors, which were identified in 2004 for the key role they play in mobility and connectivity, economic development and environmental quality.

“We have reached a major milestone in our efforts to improve mobility for our citizens and economic opportunities for businesses and the Wilmington port,” DOT Chief Operating Officer Dan DeVane said in a statement. “Not only does this work complete a four-lane link between Charlotte and Wilmington, it also brings us one step closer to finishing the I-74 corridor through North Carolina.”

General contractor Rea Contracting began construction on the 13-mile section in November 2004. It includes an interchange with Interstate 95 and connects to a six-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 74 from the U.S. 74 Bypass in Maxton to N.C. 710 that opened last November.
