RALEIGH, N.C. — The state Department of Transportation plans to begin repaving almost 13 miles of Interstate 40 west and south of Raleigh Monday night, officials said.

The "rehabilitation" project involves replacing damaged concrete slabs that are more than 20 years old between the Wade Avenue exit west of Raleigh to the I-40 split with the Interstate 440 Beltline southeast of the city.

Weather permitting, the work will begin at 9 p.m. Monday, and lanes will likely be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Some lanes also could be closed on weekends.

S.T. Wooten Corp. of Wilson will oversee the $8.5 million project, which is expected to be finished by next August.

Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes to avoid anticipated heavy delays.

Eastbound drivers can take Interstate 540 to U.S. Highway 64/264 West to the Inner I-440 Beltline and back to I-40 East.

Westbound drivers can take the Outer I-440 Beltline around Raleigh to I-40 West at Wade Avenue.

The speed limit will be 55 mph through the construction zone when lanes are closed and 65 mph at all other times. Restrictions on trucks in the left lane will be lifted during construction.
