New pavings needed for extension of interstate to the south, NCDOT says.

<b>MORRISVILLE, N.C.</b> — Interstate 540 will be closed on the westbound side this weekend at Aviation Parkway, meaning drivers headed for I-40 will need to take a detour between 7 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday.

Workers have to grind up and repave the road in preparation for the anticipated opening of I-540 beyond the current end of the road at I-40, the state Department of Transportation said Thursday.

NCDOT advised drivers trying to get to I-40 from I-540 to get off onto Aviation Parkway and go east to its interchange with I-40.

The ramps from both directions of Aviation Parkway onto I-540 westbound will be closed, NCDOT said in an announcement Thursday.
