RALEIGH, N.C. — State transportation officials announced that they will close two of three lanes on westbound Interstate 540 for a mile for 21 hours, beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday.

The closure, needed for construction work as part of the effort to extend I-540, will require narrowing the road from mile marker 22 to mile marker 21, the NC Department of Transportation said Tuesday. That  zone is near the Buffaloe Road interchange on the section of the road that recently opened.

Crews will block off the lanes beginning at 11 a.m. Wednesday and going through 8 a.m. Thursday, NCDOT said.
