DOT Announces Timetable for Proposed Toll Roads

e-mail print friendly

The state Department of Transportation on Tuesday approved a preliminary timetable for constructing two proposed toll raods in Wake County.

The DOT is considering building the Western Wake Expressway -- the leg of Interstate 540 that will stretch south from Interstate 40 to N.C. Highway 55 in Holly Springs -- and the Research Triangle Parkway -- a stretch of road to connect I-540 with the Durham Freeway -- as toll roads to speed their construction.

Officials said the could begin the bidding process on the two roads in June and begin turning dirt on the projects by August 2008. If everything stays on schedule, the two roads could open by 2011, officials said.

There are a lot of us out here who use I-40 every day and want to see these roads built yesterday... and they probably could have been if Slezly hadn't stolen a billion dollars out of the highway fund.

However we need the roads and while I won't like it I'm willing to pay the toll to get them... and the toll should be for ALL of 540, not just the new sections.

earther, you're pretty much right on it there. The tolls are only to speed up the building of the roads. I'd say develpers are pushing for it as well as town governments along the proposed southern route are also pushing for it. I can even see the road builders to an extent as they get more done sooner and profit in to their pockets quicker, even though they would get paid anyway, no matter when it was built.

This has to include I-Pass. And with I-Pass, they can extend the tolls all the way around. If not, will be stuck in traffic as people fumble for change.

Who is pushing for these toll roads? Must be real estate developers and road builders because us regular people sure don't want it. I say slow down and wait for the regular revenue to fund it without tolls. I can wait 10 years no problem. Why rush it?

I'm just going out on a limb here, but I say they won't begin "turning dirt" until 2009 and the project won't be complete until 2013. I know I'm crazy for not thinking the project will be completed on time... absolutely crazy.
