RALEIGH, N.C. — A project in Wake County is moving mountains of earth to ultimately bring drivers a smoother ride.

A conveyor belt is moving tons of dirt over U.S. 1 in Wake Forest, instead of blocking motorists' way with road closures and dump trucks.

Crews need to move 500,000 tons of dirt from one side of Capital Boulevard to the other for the Highway 98 bypass.

Wooten Construction came up with the conveyor belt idea.

It is helping crews finish the road four months early in July 2006.
