U.S. 1 Bypass From Sanford To Southern Pines Ready To Open Wednesday

Posted Updated

MOORE COUNTY, N.C. — Engineers said Tuesday that the U.S. Highway 1 bypass from Sanford to Southern Pines will open Wednesday -- in plenty of time to accommodate traffic for the U.S. Open.

The $47 million highway project will allow smoother traffic and fewer delays to Southern Pines for the golf tournament, the DOT said. In 1999, when the U.S. Open was in Pinehurst, a two-lane U.S. Highway 1 was one of the main roads used to get to the tournament.

The DOT estimates the four-lane, 13-mile bypass could take at least 15 minutes off the trip, and cut even more time when there are back ups and delays on U.S. 1.

The project's contractor, S.T. Wooten, will receive a $1 million incentive bonus for completing the project on time, bringing the total for the bypass to $48 million.
