Downtown Davie Detour 1
RALEIGH, N.C. — The plan to re-open Fayetteville Street Mall to traffic and the creation of a new Raleigh Convention Center will bring a couple of detours to Davie Street in downtown Raleigh.

From April 22 to April 30, Crews for BellSouth will relocate the company's new telecommunications cable for the new convention center.

As a result, Davie Street will be narrowed to one lane at the intersection with McDowell Street. McDowell Street will be limited to two lanes of northbound traffic from Cabarrus Street to Martin Street.

"Part of what that is going to entail is enlarging an underground vault that is actually under the road at the intersection of Davie and McDowell [streets]," said Clifton Metcalf, of BellSouth Communications. "To do that, we are going to have to congest the area a little bit.

Construction crews hope to do most of the BellSouth work on the weekends. On-street parking will also be restricted in the work zone.

The another detour involves the Fayetteville Street Mall project. A portion of Davie Street will have to be re-constructed as part of the new Fayetteville Street.

"Detours like this are not something that we want to have to do. It's something that we feel like is needed to maintain the schedule of the project and minimize the disruption to people's lives," said Dean Fox, manager of the Fayetteville Street Mall project.

Davie Street will be limited to two lanes of eastbound traffic between Salisbury Street and Wilmington Street, beginning on April 25. Westbound traffic approaching the Wilmington Street intersection will be detoured north on Wilmington Street, then west on Hargett Street, then south on Salisbury Street and back to Davie Street.

That detour is expected to remain in place until November 2005. Traffic signs will be in place to help motorists in the area.
