DOT Shifts Traffic, Closes Ramp On Eastbound I-40 In Durham County

print friendly

The state Department of Transportation has shifted eastbound Interstate 40 traffic to the left lane and inside shoulder between N.C. 54 and N.C. 55 and has closed the I-40 east off-ramp at Fayetteville Road.

The temporary changes took effect Wednesday night.

I-40 eastbound motorists traveling to Fayetteville Road should use the following signed detour:

  • Continue eastbound to the N.C. 55 (Exit 278) to I-40 West back to Fayetteville Road.
  • The I-40 east on-ramp has been closed since Sept. 14, and motorists will continue to use the following signed detour:

  • I-40 West to N.C. 751 (Exit 274) to I-40 east.
  • The traffic shift and both ramp closures will be in place for up to two months and are part of the I-40 widening project.

Work began on the I-40 widening project in early 2002 and is expected to be complete by late 2005.

Motorists are reminded to obey the posted speed limit of 55 mph and be aware of construction workers in the work zone. Stay alert and watch signs for construction information.
