Truck's driver charged with DWI in Raleigh I-40 crash
The driver of a Budget rental truck involved in a collision that caused major traffic backups on eastbound Interstate 40 Wednesday was under the influence of alcohol, according to a police report.
Posted — UpdatedThe wreck, which happened around 10 a.m. near the Rock Quarry Road exit, closed three lanes of traffic for nearly two hours.
Alan Creighton George, 42, of Statesville, was charged with driving while impaired, driving with an open container and careless and reckless driving.
The wreck report says George ran into the back of a truck belonging to the Wake County Public School System.
The collision caused the Wake schools truck to swerve and hit a guardrail and flip. The Budget truck, meanwhile, tipped over and skidded down the highway about 250 feet.
George and the driver of the Wake schools truck, George Byron Bright, 53, of Raleigh, were taken to WakeMed in Raleigh for minor injuries.
Traffic was backed up for miles while authorities investigated the crash and the Department of Transportation cleaned up diesel fuel that spilled during the collision.
