A 1,000-foot stretch of the multi-lane highway, at the approach to the 15-501 overpass, will be affected, requiring drivers to travel at slower speeds and use greater patience.
"The road will be better when we're finished," DOT engineer Eben Miller said. "This is a rehabilitation of I-40. The end product, I think, is well worth the inconvenience it's causing in the short term."
The DOT is urging drivers to obey the 55 mph speed limit and the warning signs.
Last Friday, one person was killed and two were injured in another construction zone on I-40 East near Fayetteville Road. The road was shut down for nine hours, backing up traffic for miles.
The closure is necessary as part of the I-40 widening project, which is anticipated to be complete in late 2005.
