North Carolina is the winner of more than $8.8 million in federal grants for highway improvements, the U.S. Department of Transportation says.

<b>RALEIGH, N.C.</b> — North Carolina is the winner of more than $8.8 million in federal grants for highway improvements, the U.S. Department of Transportation says.

The funding will go toward 10 projects across the state, including $4.75 million to improve a stretch of Interstate 40 in Iredell County.

"Transportation investments like these will create jobs and improve the quality of life for North Carolina residents as well as strengthen the state's economy," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. "The demand from the states for these funds shows just how critical the need is for infrastructure investment."

LaHood did not say how many jobs there could be as a result of the grants.

Other grants include nearly $1.2 million for a construction ramp and gantry for a ferry in Craven County and $907,609 to design and build a new phase of the South Tar River Greenway in Greenville. <a href="http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/pressroom/fhwa1137/fhwa1137nc.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(View a full list of projects.)</a>
