HOPE MILLS, N.C. — The driver of a tractor-trailer died early Tuesday when he crashed into a pickup truck that was stranded on N.C. Highway 87 near Hope Mills.

The wreck happened about 6 a.m. between Blossom and Sand Hill roads. State troopers said Daniel Mitchell Coleman, 68, of Fair Bluff, was hauling 7,800 gallons of diesel fuel when he struck the right rear of a 1988 Chevrolet pickup that had run out of gas and was partially in the road.

The tractor-trailer overturned, spilling fuel and sliding into the median. Troopers said Coleman was ejected and died at the scene.

The driver of the pickup, Leroy Munson, 51, of Hope Mills, and his female passenger were not hurt.

Troopers said no charges were filed against Munson because he did not abandon his disabled vehicle, which is against state law.
