ZEBULON, N.C. — A tractor-trailer carrying liquid nitrogen overturned in Nash County Saturday morning, spilling the chemical on the roadway and causing traffic backups in the area, according to the state Highway Patrol.

The driver, William Carter Jr., 38, was transported to WakeMed for treatment of minor injuries. He was cited for failing to maintain lane control in the wreck.

Troopers said the cause of the wreck is still under investigation, but that Carter said he swerved to avoid hitting another car and careened off the shoulder of the highway before the truck flipped onto its side.

The wreck happened on westbound U.S. Highway 64 at N.C. Highway 231, between Zebulon and Spring Hope, shortly before 9 a.m.

The nitrogen spill posed no danger to the public, troopers said.
