CLAYTON, N.C. — A tractor trailer fire caught fire Tuesday morning, blocking the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 70 Bypass near Ranch Road in Clayton.

The driver of a Southco distributing truck said other drivers started flashing their lights just before 4 a.m., so the driver pulled over. Flames were visible under the trailer, the driver said.

The truck operators were able to disconnect the trailer from the cab before the fire spread. The Clayton Fire Department quickly extinguished the flames.

Officials said no one was injured.

At 5:30 a.m., one lane had reopened, but officials said all lanes may have to be shut down again when a large tow truck arrives to remove the tractor trailers.

The fire appears to have started from some mechanical issues around the trailer axle or brakes, officials said.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is investigating.
