Town of Cary appoints next town manager

Stegall’s comes to Cary from Elgin, Ill., where he was city manager since 2009. His first day in Cary will be on Aug. 4.

“Cary is a community I have admired for years for its thoughtful approach to governance and planning,” said Stegall. “I’m honored to join this talented staff in service to the Town Council and citizens of Cary.”

Stegall, 43, will replace Ben Shivar, who retired in September after more than 39 years of service. Deputy Town Manager Mike Bajorek has served as Cary’s interim town manager since Shivar’s retirement.

“Cary is a very special place, and finding our next Town Manager is one of the most important decisions this council will ever make,” said Cary Mayor Harold Weinbrecht. “After a lot of looking and hard work, the council found Sean to be the best fit for our organization and community, and we’re very excited about having him join our family.

“We had a number of very well-qualified candidates for this challenging position, and the town is grateful to all those who showed an interest in serving Cary.”

Stegall was selected after two national searches that provided more than 80 applicants from 26 states, according to officials.

Prior to his service as city manager in Elgin, Stegall was the town’s assistant city manager and the assistant city manager for Batavia, N.Y.

Stegall, a native of Galesburg, Ill., will move to Cary this summer, along with his wife, Michelle, and their daughter.
