Tourists adrift in Pamlico Sound rescued
A Good Samaritan vessel rescued two tourists adrift in the Pamlico Sound on Monday morning after the Coast Guard had spent a night searching for them.
Posted — UpdatedCallers to the Dare County 911 center reported seeing a red skiff with a red top in the sound around 2 p.m. Sunday, Coast Guard officials said. The vessel's operators were seemingly disoriented, and the skiff appeared to be out of gas.
Coast Guards crews from Ocracoke and Hatteras and airmen from Elizabeth City began a search for the missing skiff. Overnight, they were joined by the Hatteras Island Rescue and personnel from Dare and Hyde counties.
A Good Samaritan vessel found the missing skiff around 7:30 a.m. Its operators, Dawn Ware and Jennifer Broderick, were still safely aboard.
The skiff was being towed to Engelhard.
The skiff was a rental and did not have a marine radio or global-positioning satellite system on board.
Coast Guard officials said boaters should not rely on cell phones, but always use a marine radio as their primary means of communication.
