Tour de Fat festival 'wheels' into Durham with bikes, beer
Tour de Fat, a celebration of bicycles, beer and sustainability, wheels into the Bull City Saturday.

The day-long festival was born in Fort Collins, Colorado to increase awareness in cycling as a sustainable form of transportation. Each year, New Belgium Brewing travels across the country from May to October, celebrating bicycles, "humankind's greatest invention," in places like Colorado, Illinois and California.
This weekend, the event hits North Carolina with festivities for both bike enthusiasts and non-riders from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at Diamond View Park in Durham.
Thousands are expected to participate in a costumed bike parade, a 1,000 person dance contest, a "how slow can you ride a bicycle" competition and more. At 3 p.m., festival-goers can swap their car for a bike and experience what it's like to rely on a bicycle for a commute.
Don't want to ride? Three outdoor stages will feature music and entertainment by local bands, musicians and comedians. There will be plenty of beer at the festival too, of course. Everyone 21 and older will be able to sample favorites from New Belgium, including the brewery’s flagship brew, Fat Tire and New Belgium’s latest offering, the Citradelic Tangerine IPA.
The event is completely free, but all donations and proceeds from beer and merchandise sales will go to Durham-area non-profits.
