After lightning-filled night, heat and humidity could fuel more storms Thursday
Hot temperatures in the mid-90s on Thursday could once again help fuel showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening.
Posted — Updated"We've got to endure one more really hot day before we cool off a bit for the weekend," WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth said. "With today's heat, more showers and storms could pop up."
Widespread severe weather isn't expected, but storms that do form could include heavy rain, frequent lightning and strong winds.
On Wednesday night, a strong line of storms pushed through the Triangle, prompting a brief tornado warning in Franklin County at about 9 p.m.
The warning expired about 10 minutes after it was issued, and no damage or tornado sightings were reported in the county.
Elsewhere, lightning was the issue as storms rolled through.
A house on Ashley Downs Drive in Apex caught fire when it was struck by lightning at about 8:30 p.m.
A house on Draymore Lane in Cary was fully engulfed after a lightning strike just before 9:30 p.m. The homeowner said she heard a loud boom and saw the power go out before realizing the house was on fire.
The home was considered a total loss after the roof and back of the house were completely destroyed in the fire.
After Thursday's heat and scattered storms, the area will begin to clear out for the weekend. Highs will be in the 80s Friday through Monday, and mostly clear conditions will make for a beautiful Father's Day weekend.
