The House takes up historic tax credits as the Senate follows through on a plan to reduce the power rates for some in eastern North Carolina. A House Judiciary Committee meeting on medical marijuana is also garnering attention.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Good morning and welcome to Today @NCCapitol for Wednesday, March 25. Here's what's going on at the General Assembly and elsewhere in state government.

THE COMMITTEE WE'RE WATCHING: The House Judiciary I Committee will take up a bill that would legalize medical marijuana in North Carolina at 12:30 p.m. Prospects for the measure aren't great, but lawmakers say they are giving it a hearing after a deluge of phone calls from backers and opponents.

AGING: The House Aging Committee at 11 a.m. takes up a bill that would reinstate a tax deduction for seniors with out-of-pocket medical expenses. The loss of this credit has prompted complaints from a number of constituents.

SENATE: The state Senate meets at 2 p.m. and will take up a bill designed to give eastern North Carolina residents a break on power bills by easing the debt on the North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency, an electric cooperative made up of about 30 cities.

HOUSE: The state House meets at 3 p.m. and will take a final vote on eliminating protest petitions in controversial land use cases and hear a bill that would reinstate the historic renovation tax credit sought by Gov. Pat McCrory and city leaders.

THE GOVERNOR: McCrory will drop in on UNC's lobby day at the North Carolina Museum of History at 10:45 a.m. Later in the day, McCrory – and probably a good number of lawmakers – will stop by the annual seafood bash thrown by Fred Mills of Mills Construction Co.
