RALEIGH, N.C. — House members are scheduled to vote Wednesday on whether to override Gov. Roy Cooper's veto of a bill to make trial court judicial elections partisan races.

The bill would reverse a mid-1990s change that allowed judicial candidates to run without party labels that Cooper championed when he was a state lawmaker. Advocates for nonpartisan elections say they cut down on the perception that judges could be biased one way or the other due to ideological concerns. Those seeking a return to partisan races point out that political parties have always backed slates of supposedly nonpartisan judges and that many voters know little about judges aside from their party affiliations.

WRAL.com plans to carry the House session live at 2 p.m.

Committees: The General Assembly publishes a full list of committees daily. Among the other meetings WRAL.com plans to stream are:
  • House Health at 11 a.m. Committee members will debate a measure to require insurers to cover autism treatment provided by a board certified behavior analyst.
  • House Judiciary I at 1 p.m., where the committee will debate several measures, including a bill allowing concealed handgun permit holders to carry their guns on property used as both a school and a church if it is outside of school hours.
Senate floor: There is only one bill on the Senate floor calendar. It would ensure that teachers who earned certain bonuses would receive them even if they changed schools or grades.
