Today @NCCapitol (May 11, 2015): Inking the Dix deal

RALEIGH, N.C. — Good morning and welcome to Today @NCCapitol for Monday, May 11. Here's what's going on at the General Assembly and around state government.

DIX DEAL: Gov. Pat McCrory and Raleigh Mayor Nancy McFarlane will sign the Dorothea Dix sale recently approved by both the City Council and the Council of State. The action, more ministerial than meaningful, is one of a number of legal steps needed to carry through on the deal. The most significant threshold the city must now meet is putting a $52 million financing package in place to complete the purchase.

THE HOUSE: The state House will hold a no-vote skeleton session at 4 p.m. This week, budget writers will be compiling their draft of a roughly $21 billion state budget, which expected to roll out next Monday.

THE SENATE: Members of the state Senate will meet at 7 p.m. Among the three relatively non-controversial bills on the calendar is a measure that would add solid waste collection trucks to North Carolina's move-over law. The change would specify that drivers would have to slow down or move over one lane when approaching a stopped trash truck by the side of the road, as they are required to do now with a stopped emergency vehicle.
