Today @NCCapitol (May 6, 2015): Grading schools, talking economic development

RALEIGH, N.C. — Good morning and welcome to Today @NCCapitol for Wednesday, May 6. Here's what's going on at the General Assembly and around state government.

BUDGET COMING: House Speaker Tim Moore told members Tuesday that the chamber's leaders tentatively planned to roll out the House version of the budget in time for floor votes on May 20 and 21. This week, lawmakers are waiting for revenue estimates put together after April tax collections. Those revenue estimates will go a long way toward defining how much lawmakers have to spend this year.

THE GOVERNOR: Gov. Pat McCrory is due to speak to the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners at 9:30 a.m.

GRADES: The Senate Education Committee will take up a House bill that would revamp North Carolina's school grading system, giving more weight to how much progress students make. WRAL.com plans to carry this meeting live at 11 a.m. Check the Video Central box on our home page.

HOLSTERED: The state House has delayed consideration of an omnibus firearms bill that has come under heavy criticism. Although it had been scheduled for a committee hearing Wednesday morning, that meeting was canceled.

HOUSE: The state House is scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. The only bill on the calendar is House Bill 760, the regulatory reform bill that would freeze North Carolina's requirement that power companies buy a certain percentage of their power from renewable resources rather than allow it to expand.

SENATE: The State Senate meets at 2 p.m. but there are no bills on the calendar.

DEMOCRATS: The "Main Street Democrats" group will hold a news conference to press lawmakers to take up economic development measures.
