Today @NCCapitol (May 4, 2015): Getting into NC GEAR

RALEIGH, N.C. — Good morning and welcome to Today @NCCapitol for Monday, May 4. Here's what's going on at the General Assembly and elsewhere in state government.

HOUSE AND SENATE: The state House is scheduled to meet at 4 p.m. The state Senate is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Neither chamber has any votes scheduled. Members of both chambers are gearing back up after two long weeks in advance of last Thursday's crossover deadline.

NC GEAR: The legislature's Joint Program Evaluation Committee meets at 3 p.m. to hear a presentation on Gov. Pat McCrory's NC GEAR program. McCrory set up NC GEAR to find cost savings in state government and incorporated many of its recommendations into his state budget proposal.

SCHOOL CALENDAR: "It's been 11 years since North Carolina lawmakers told public schools when the school year could open and close," reports the Associated Press. "But local school boards remain unwilling to dismiss their insistence that they and not the state should decide when classes are out for summer in their areas. A new politically diverse coalition of advocates and dozens of lawmakers agree with them." COMING THIS WEEK: The House Appropriations Committee is scheduled to meet on Wednesday morning to review a sweeping gun policy proposal that members of the state House first considered last week.
