Today @NCCapitol (Feb. 25): Braving the storm

The House has called off session for the week, but the Senate is preparing to dig into some juicy topics before digging out of the storm.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Good morning and welcome to Today @NCCapitol for Wednesday, Feb. 25. Here's what's going on at the legislature and around state government.

HOUSE: The state House has called off work for the week, dodging an incoming snowstorm that promises to add to slick conditions already on the ground in Raleigh. Look for a no-vote skeleton session on Friday.

SENATE FLOOR: The Senate floor session is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., but we had word from the Pro Tem's office that it will recess until 10 a.m.

If the session does come about, expect the honorables to take up the bill that would allow magistrates to opt out of performing wedding ceremonies.

IN FOR A PENNY: If the Senate does come in during the snow day, they have several meetings scheduled. They include:

An Agriculture and Environment Committee meeting during which Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources Donald van der Vaart and DENR staff will address the committee. This meeting is currently scheduled for 10 a.m., the same time as senators expect to get to work for their floor session, presenting a potential conflict. UPDATE: This meeting is now moved to 11 a.m.
A noon meeting of the newly formed Workforce Development Committee.
A 1 p.m. Finance Committee meeting to discuss incentives.

THE GOVERNOR: Gov. Pat McCrory's schedule shows him in Charlotte all day Wednesday, including a 9 a.m. announcement at Quail Hollow Club.
