Tips in Rocky Mount unsolved murders worth $5,000

The first crime took place March 7 at Sammy's Food Mart, at 1100 Old Wilson Road, as owner Rafiq Salim "Sammy" Soufan, 47, was locking up. Police are looking for two or three people who were possibly driving a dark SUV.

On April 13, Shakeem Devonte Avent, 18, crashed his burgundy Cadillac into a white BMW, then hit a wall at the corner of Sunset Avenue and Lee Street. Emergency personnel found Avent in the car with a gunshot wound. He died at the scene.

James Tony Cooper, 46, was the victim of a home invasion April 26 at 2028 Brandon Lane. A witness spotted two black men with dark complexions and medium builds, one clean-shaven and one with a goatee, running from the house that evening.

The second convenience store shooting happened May 19 at Karims Food Mart Store, 2053 Raleigh Road. Abdul Karim Alwarrak, 47, was found inside his store dead of multiple gunshot wounds. Police are looking for a green or dark-colored minivan in connection with that crime.
