Time Warner cable rates to increase

Posted December 23, 2008

— Time Warner Cable plans to raise its rates next month, but a spokeswoman said most cable television customers won't see any increase on their bills.

Notices recently mailed to customers show most cable services will go up in price about $3 to $4. Standard cable, for example, will increase from $40.50 to $43.71 a month.

Time Warner usually increases rates at the beginning of the year, spokeswoman Melissa Buscher said. About 60 percent of customers won't see an increase, though, because their services are bundled with digital phone service, high-speed Internet service or both, she said.

Taz - DirecTV has the best line up, package options and provides the best value. Dish is good, but they don't offer some channels (that I'd miss). Because TWC has some much tied up in phusical infrastructure AND they're owned by Time-Warner, they really don't have the ability (cost) or the interest (push their own TW content) to offer a good value. They also love their monopoly contracts in most cities....

Of all the bills I hate paying Cable the most.

When cable was initially brought into the area I can remember it was $6.00 a month.

    They go up every year.
I watch less than 15% of all the channels.
They should pay me for all the shopping channels.

I really like my DirectTV, I have had it for 13 yrs and am pleased to the max. I have had TWC and will never do so again.

"When it's time just call them up and ask for the retension dept. they will usually have a better deal for you."

This used to be true but no longer -- Retention doesn't hand out deals like they used to. The fact that we were 12 year customers who paid on time meant nothing to "Jimmy" in Retetion who told me we'd had all the specials we were entitled to for a lifetime (that's pretty much a verbatim quote). Less than 30 days later we were all hooked up with DirectTV and TW will never see another dollar of our money. Hope they thought not allowing a measly $15 discount on my bundled service for a year was worth the loss of our service entirely.

    DSL..... YUCK!

Really... who cares if DirecTV was the first all digital provider? Saying something is better because they were the first is down right foolish. DirecTV's digial HD MPEG-4 quality is not near as good as the digital HD quality broadcast directly from the local station.

BE: "What is needed is some competition for them."

DirecTV was the first provider of Digitally Transmitted TV. Cable wouldn't have provided Digital Cable if it wasn't for the competition and DirecTV's Digital Satellite Service. I support the original creator of most anything. I got DSL because it came out long before Cable Internet. DirecTV was Digital long before Digital Cable existed. DirecTV sold the first receiver in June of 1994. I bought two receivers and a dish in December 1994. I've since added two more receivers and haven't looked back since. Just as I support DSL because it was the first High Speed Internet Service in the area.

"That will be a problem come February 2009 when your Rabbit Ears won't work without a convertor box. And you won't receive as many channels as you do now."

A $40 converter box is free with the $40 coupon from the government. We get more channels with the digital switch, not less. And, it's free. No one should pay for TV - just watch broadcast TV, or better yet, go to the library and get a book. That's free too.

I've had a goal the last 20 years of my life: To never giving TW or TWC another dollar. So far so good. Have direcTV, 3 DVR's and couldn't be happier! It's the channels you DON'T get with standard and/or premium packages that stands out to me; why would you limit yourself to cable?

  • BE Dec 23, 2008

I have alread dropped all the premium channels. Guess it is time to cut some more. Frankly, I think Time Warner service sucks. What is needed is some competition for them.
