This is the third year that the museum in Spencer, about two hours from the Triangle, has offered the holiday event inspired by what's become a classic movie and book.

The experience includes an opportunity to take a trip aboard one of the museum's trains to the North Pole, complete with music from the movie's soundtrack. On board, you'll be treated to cookies and hot chocolate, along with singing, dancing and a reading of The Polar Express.

Once you arrive at the destination, Santa will visit and everyone gets a silver sleigh bell.

New activities this year include expanded games, live entertainment and s'mores pits. There also will be a animated Christmas light show.

Ticket prices vary depending on the age of the rider and the kind of ticket you buy. Kids under 2 do not need a ticket, but they must sit in their parent or guardian's lap.

Ticket prices range between $30 and $40 for kids ages 2 to 12 and $36 and $46 for adults. There also are packages for two and four-seat tables.

The Polar Express runs Nov. 18 to Nov. 19, Nov. 24 to Nov. 27, Dec. 2 to Dec. 4, Dec. 9 to Dec. 11 and Dec. 15 to Dec. 22. The Spencer museum's website has more information and tickets.
The Great Smoky Mountain Railway in Bryson City, about five hours from the Triangle in western North Carolina, offers a similar Polar Express event.
