Thursday Wrap: Pulling out veto stamp
Gov. Pat McCrory wasted no time in declaring that he would veto a bill that would give magistrates opposed to gay marriage a way to bypass presiding over same-sex weddings.
Posted — UpdatedThe governor announced his decision a few hours after the measure cleared the House after a second day of contentious debate, saying that public officials need to carry out the duties of their office, regardless of their personal views. Legislative leaders expressed disappointment in the decision but stopped short of saying they would override it.
The Senate had its own contentious debate, giving tentative approval to a bill that would extend the waiting period for a woman seeking an abortion from 24 to 72 hours and would put more obligations on physicians performing abortions. A final vote is expected Monday.
The Senate also expanded Sunday hunting in the state, gave preliminary approval to a batch of changes to state alcohol laws and approved retention elections for incumbent justices on the state Supreme Court, whereby voters would have to decide whether to keep the judge in office or call for an election of a new judge.
