RALEIGH, N.C. — Fifty-three weeks of vitriol, hand-wringing and finger-pointing ended Thursday as the General Assembly quickly passed an Gov. Roy Cooper signed legislation to repeal House Bill 2.

But that was quickly replaced by vitriol, hand-wringing and finger-pointing by both the far left and the far right toward the new legislation. One side says it continues to discriminate, while the other says North Carolina caved in to pressure from business interests and the NCAA.

The repeal effort sucked most of the air out of the legislature all day, with the Senate canceling a confirmation hearing for Secretary of Environmental Quality Michael Regan.

The House did manage to pass a proposal to split the annual report cards for public schools into separate grades for student growth and achievement on standardized tests.
