RALEIGH, N.C. — The debate over Raleigh's lease of the Dorothea Dix site heated up in the Senate, while the House put off its calendar to address a voting error in the UNC Board of Governors election.

The Senate Appropriations Committee approved legislation that would void Raleigh's lease for the 325-acre site, but not before Sen. Tom Apodaca, R-Henderson, exchanged sharp words with Jim Goodmon, the president of WRAL's parent company, who spoke against tearing up the lease on behalf of a group that supports Raleigh's plan to create a major park on the Dix site.

Meanwhile, the House remained in recess for hours Thursday afternoon while Republican caucus leaders explained how they had miscounted the votes in Wednesday's election of eight Board of Governors members. They they spent more time recounting the ballots to correct the error.
