Thursday Wrap: Court-ing debate

Posted March 9

— Three courts-related bills the House approved Thursday generated lots of debate because lawyers are interested, they smelled of politics and lawmakers were in a fightin' mood after a long week.

One would cut the size of the state Court of Appeals from 15 to 12 judges, while the other two would put lawmakers, not the governor, in charge of naming special Superior Court judges and filling District Court vacancies.

Meanwhile, three senators introduced a bill to tap lottery funds to give raises to principals and assistant principals statewide and help poorer districts with school construction. Lawmakers also unveiled a plan to reintroduce the Teaching Fellows program to encourage people to pursue careers as STEM teachers.
