Thursday Wrap: Ball in McCrory's court
It's up to Gov. Pat McCrory to respond to the U.S. Department of Justice regarding House Bill 2 after state lawmakers said Thursday they have no intention of taking any action on the state law to meet a Monday deadline.
Posted — UpdatedThe Justice Department on Wednesday informed state officials that the law, which requires transgender people to use public bathrooms that match the gender on their birth certificates, violates the civil rights of state workers and students. The government gave the state until Monday to "remedy" the violations, but it's unclear whether McCrory will say the state won't enforce the bathroom rules or will invite a federal lawsuit over the matter.
Elsewhere, the Department of Environmental Quality has ended its experiment with SolarBee water mixers in Jordan Lake because they didn't improve the water quality in the lake. State regulations to limit pollution runoff into the lake remain on hold, however.
The State Board of Elections is investigating after about 1,900 provisional ballots from the March 15 primary were mishandled in Durham County. Officials said the mixup didn't affect the results of any races.
