Attendance at Thursday's State Fair preview day was 42,854, according to Brian Long, public affairs director for the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

That's down from 44,167 on the same day in 2011.

Last year, more than 1 million people attended the fair over its 11-day run.
