Three sought in beating of bouncer at Spring Lake bar

Posted January 22, 2013

— Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office detectives said Tuesday that they are searching for three men wanted in connection with the beating last week of an employee of a Spring Lake bar.

Robert Matthews, 25, was working the door of FUBAR, at 2350 Lillington Highway, on Jan. 14 when he was repeatedly hit on the back of his head with a pool cue, authorities said. His assailants continued to punch and kick him as he lay on the floor unconscious.

Arrest warrants have been issued charging Travis Jake Cockman, 41, of 3291 South River Road in Lillington, with attempted first-degree murder and charging Benny Joe Ray, 46, also of 3291 South River Road, and Mark Anthony Wood Jr., 28, of 141 Capitol Hill Road in Lillington, with being accessories after the fact.

Investigators determined that five men were acting rowdy in FUBAR, and Matthews approached Cockman to warn him against trying to steal pool balls from a pool table. Cockman ignored Matthews and walked back to the pool tables inside, and the attack began moments later, authorities said.

Anyone who knows the whereabouts of Cockman, Ray or Wood is asked to call the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office at 910-323-1500.

Travis's step-brother, Benny Ray, has been arrested....one down, two to go.

Travis (the censor will not let me post his last name LOL) comes from a family with, to put it mildly, a lot of unsavory characters. This is no surprise at all.

If you do not like a club bar or restaurant or even a store meet somewhere else. If the business ripped you off then you call the police or your lawyer. No need to beat up on someone except in self defense and I am sure in did not take 3 people defend against one person

It is often said that uneducated people will do uneducated things. This has to be one of the most prime examples of that philosophical saying.

Ok so everyone that is basically saying the bouncer deserved it you don't even know him. I personally have known him for 11 years and he's an awesome person that would have your back and not think twice this is also a man who has served our country. And yes this guy is a coward for hitting him from behind cuz I know if he would have come at him like a man he would have been on the floor.

These citizens may have a Lillington address, but i'm sure they're probably from the western part of Harnett County. It's a whole different world out that way in the county. Almost like the land that time forgot. They basically drink and fight, and afterwards, they drink some more and fight some more. Why do you think they're missing teeth?

They must ban pool tables and pool balls at once. They will probaly say England did it so we should.

When I read a pool table and pool balls kill 20 innocents I will have to at least think about agreeing with you.

Fu bar? Sounds like a quality establishment! Lock up these knuckleheads for a long time. Only cowards keep beating a man when he is already down on the ground.
