— Smithfield police are investigating a shooting that sent a 3-year-old boy and two adults to a local hospital Thursday.

Two weapons were recovered near the scene, but no suspects have been identified or arrested, police said.

Police said they believe the child and his mother were innocent bystanders to the shooting, which occurred outside of 509 Mill St. around 1:40 p.m. Both suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.

Their names and conditions were not released.

A 24-year-old man was also injured.

All three were taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle. Hospital spokeswoman Suzette Rodriguez said the mother and child were transferred to a different medical facility.

The man was treated and released.

The hospital's emergency room treatment area was on lockdown from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., Rodriguez said.

When The Great Gun Grab goes down (and it will bloody go down),The Republic WILL follow. I hope that all of the liberal lemmings will be pleased with themselves then.

Gun control is the key to genocide. Ask any American Indian.

Ignorance begats ignorance and the government is all about ignorance.

Why do people think that more laws will make people become law abiding citizens? If they don't obey the current laws why would they start obeying new laws?
Guns are not the problem....wicked people are the problem! Is that so difficult to comprehend? I guess if you want to believe that all men are good you have to blame the guns.

"Does anyone know why the treatment area would be on lockdown? The crime scene I understand, but why the hosp? Morrigan"

I think it would be in case the shooter came after them to finish what he started, but not sure. Makes sense though. -Scubagirl

You're absolutely right Scubagirl...this is pretty much a weekly occurrence at WakeMed...

There you go. Shame them into not shooting people! I hate to be the one to tell you but anytime you read crime stories a responsible adult probably wasn't involved.
