Smithfield, N.C. — Smithfield police are investigating a shooting that sent a 3-year-old boy and two adults to a local hospital Thursday.
Two weapons were recovered near the scene, but no suspects have been identified or arrested, police said.
Police said they believe the child and his mother were innocent bystanders to the shooting, which occurred outside of 509 Mill St. around 1:40 p.m. Both suffered injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
Their names and conditions were not released.
A 24-year-old man was also injured.
All three were taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle. Hospital spokeswoman Suzette Rodriguez said the mother and child were transferred to a different medical facility.
The man was treated and released.
The hospital's emergency room treatment area was on lockdown from 2 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., Rodriguez said.
