— Three family members were killed Friday night in a two-vehicle wreck south of Raeford, officials with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said.

According to troopers, Jamie Oxendine, 43, of Raeford, was driving on North Old Wire Road at about 10 p.m. when his vehicle was hit by a car at the intersection with North Shannon Road.

Oxendine, his 40-year-old wife Mary Ann and 17-year-old son Austin were all killed the wreck.

Troopers said 29-year-old Rodolfo Marin Vela of St. Pauls, ran a stop sign on North Shannon Road. Vela and Martinez Misael-Tomas, a passenger in the vehicle, were taken to a local hospital.

Ray Crumpler said he and his wife were getting ready for bed Friday night when they heard the crash outside.

"We heard a loud crash," he said. "As soon as we heard it we immediately walked outside on the porch and saw the vehicles."

Crumpler said he had never seen anything like it before.

"Basically all three of them looked like it was instantaneous. I've seen wrecks, but the impact was pretty bad," he said. "I checked for a pulse and I didn't feel anything."

Vela was charged with driving while impaired, reckless driving, three counts of felony death by vehicle, stop sign violation, no drivers license, seat belt violation, open container of alcohol, and exceeding a safe speed for conditions.

"I mean you could smell the alcohol and see the beer cans in the truck," Crumpler said.

Vela was being held in the Hoke County Detention Center.

No other information about the wreck has been released.

my point is for those that want to hang anyone for any DUI or give the death penalty to them. the same commenters here in this given case say the same for any DUI deaths or no deaths due to the events. most voted republican. I'm not saying that this particular case doesn't deserve the hardest punishment that can be given by law but as stated most posters will say the same weather death is a result or not. Also lets face it, given the number of commenters at least a few have had a DUI or have driven drunk over the .08 limit and just haven't gotten caught. so they comment like they are better than any of these stories when they have just been lucky instead.

Another drunk in a big truck survives, even with out wearing a seat belt, after running over three people in what was likely a car. By a neanderthal's standard the drunk won.

People, can we please have some respect for this family in mourning, and leave the name calling and political disputes for another day? I don't think anyone will disagree this piece of trash doesn't deserve to be alive right now, no matter what his nationality. My prayers are with the family and friends affected by this horrific tragedy.

I am very aware of the Reagan Amnesty. As to statistics unless you do not like Duke, here is a good place to start.
    http://scholarship.law.duke.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=3659&context=lcp
While dated it does set a baseline. More current research is here:

    and here:

No ad hominem from me, just deriving a conclusion from the research. 11 million illegals in the USA, 60% from Mexico (see above links). From my point of view, most legal immigrants (of any nationality) tend to be law abiding future citizens as they understand that any infractions can impair their ability to become a Blue Passport holding US Citizen. Given that there are roughly 32 Mexicans in the USA legally (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mexican_American) it appears that the minority (illegals) are making a bad name for the rest.

"Can't wait to hear the liberals explain how he's the victim."

Haven't heard a peep from the "liberals" supporting the drunk driver. So far, it seems like the liberals are taking the high road - remembering the victims rather than trying to politicize this tragedy.
