Three charged in early-morning shooting in Durham County

Durham County sheriff's deputies charged three people Thursday in connection with an early-morning shooting near Bahama that sent two people to a local hospital.

BAHAMA, N.C. — Durham County sheriff's deputies charged three people Thursday in connection with an early-morning shooting near Bahama that sent two people to a local hospital.

Investigators said the victims, whose names have not been released, were driving along Old Oxford Road near Amed Road about 2 a.m. when they were shot.

The two then drove less than a mile away to a nearby medical center at the Federal Correction Complex in Butner.

Hospital staff called an ambulance, which took the victims to a local hospital. Their injuries were not life-threatening.

Authorities have not offered further details about the shootings, including a possible motive.

Mario Dewayne Dawson Jr., 20, Damarjeza Daquan Dawson, 20, and Khalid Jamall Hopkins, 18, each face two counts of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon and one count of shooting into an occupied vehicle.

The three were each jailed under a $1.5 million bond.
