Thousands turn out for Raleigh's 'Slide the City' party
Thousands of people turned out in downtown Raleigh Saturday afternoon to take part in "Slide the City," a giant water party featuring a 1,000-foot water slide.
Posted — UpdatedCrews blocked off a large section of Glenwood Avenue early Saturday to prep for the event, and the slide itself runs from Jones Street to North Street. It goes past several popular restaurants, including Tobacco Road Sports Cafe and Hibernian Pub.
"Raleigh was selected because we had an awesome venue here," said Brandon Jay, the Slide the City event organizer. "The city was great to work with!"
At 120 gallons of water per minute, it was a watershed moment for Glenwood South.
"Well, I love it!," said Kristina Conant, of Raleigh. "It brings a lot of folks to downtown and it brought a lot of attention to North Carolina. We love it!"
Many participants said the event made them feel like a kid again.
"I love how you just jump on and slide really fast and everyone bumps into you," said 8-year-old Jocelyn Collins. "I'm lucky I didn't get run over."
Tickets for the event went on sale in early April and sold out quickly.
