Wrightsville Beach, N.C. — An estimated 50,000 visitors gathered on water and land Saturday night for a beach-specific celebration of the holiday season. It was the 31st year that Wrightsville Beach hosted the North Carolina Holiday Flotilla.
They watched, cheered and texted their votes as a parade of yachts and motorboats floated past, each decorated with a holiday theme and thousands of glittering lights. The flotilla follows a 4-mile route through Motts Channel, Banks Channel and the Intracoastal Waterway, passing the judges' viewing stand at Blockade Runner Beach Resort.
Captain Mike Spivey claimed the best overall award and holiday bragging rights with his "Good Tidings to You, Turtle."
A glowing "Yellow Submarine," captained by Skip Wilson took the Crowd Favorite Nod, and a "Futilla," from Ava and Scott Werstlein was the Peoples Choice.
The winners split $10,500 in cash prizes.
The event was capped by a 21-minute, 4,000-round fireworks display by Zambelli International.
