Third suspect charged in trucker assault

A third person has been arrested in the assault and robbery of a long-haul trucker last month near Wade, authorities said Friday.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A third person has been arrested in the assault and robbery of a long-haul trucker last month near Wade, authorities said Friday.

Stefon Delaney Purdie, 20, of Robeson County, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury, robbery with a deadly weapon and conspiracy.

The trucker, Wael Wael, of Jacksonville, Fla., was found May 2 in the median of Goldsboro Road and was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He remains hospitalized with severe head trauma.

Detectives on Tuesday arrested Lutina Oxendine, a woman known to frequent truck stops, in connection with the case, and Leroy Douglas, 37, of 7140 Laurinburg Road in Raeford, was arrested Wednesday.
