ROANOKE RAPIDS, N.C. — Halifax County sheriff's investigators said Monday that they have arrested a third person in connection with a suspected dog-fighting operation near Roanoke Rapids.

Elton Gary, 44, was arrested last week on two counts of dog fighting, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and numerous drug charges, including manufacturing marijuana, felony possession of marijuana and maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for controlled substances.

He was jailed under a $30,000 bond and is awaiting a May 18 court appearance.

Last Sunday, authorities seized 21 pit pulls as well as 68 marijuana plants from Gary's home at 1045 Stack Powell Road.

Elton Gary's wife, Erica Gary, 40, and their son, Zhaqwaun Jevontae Gary, 19, were initially arrested on several drug-related charges. Authorities said Monday that they each face two additional counts of felony dog fighting charges.
