Thieves plunder hotel vending machines

Posted December 11, 2008

— Thieves have twice broken into coin-operated machines at a local hotel in recent weeks, and police on Thursday asked for the public's help to identify two suspects.

Vending machines at the Sheraton Hotel, on Europa Drive, were broken into on Nov. 21 and again late Monday, police said. Security cameras captured images of two men near the machines at about the time of the latest break-ins, police said.

The men were seen leaving the hotel in a Chevrolet Camaro, police said.

Anyone has information about the suspects is asked to call the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2760 or Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515.

If the time stamps on the photos are correct, one would think all exterior doors except the front one would be locked and presumably only accessible from outside with a room key, if at all. If they weren't registered guests, wouldn't they have had to come into the hotel through the front door and lobby? Wouldn't someone at the front desk have seen them enter. If they were registered guests, wouldn't someone at the hotel still be able to recognize them?
