RALEIGH, N.C. — If you own a Labrador Retriever, you're in good company.

The breed again ranked as the most-popular breed in Raleigh — and across the country — in the American Kennel Club's annual poll. The AKC uses dog registration data pulled from local zip codes to cull its rankings.

Raleigh's top five breeds for 2017:
  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. Golden Retriever
  3. German Shepherd
  4. Beagle
  5. Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier surged into the No. 5 spot after appearing in 2016 in eighth place in the City of Oaks.

“Raleigh’s top three most popular closely mirror the nation’s, with Labs, Goldens and German Shepherds holding tight to the top spots,” said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. “Raleigh does not share the rest of the country’s love of French Bulldogs, however. The French didn't even crack the city’s top 10."

Labs held the top spot in the national ranking for the 27th consecutive year. But the "big mover and shaker" for 2017 was that French Bulldog. Despite its poor showing in Raleigh, the little pup earn the No. 4 spot nationwide.

Most popular breeds nationwide for 2017:
  1. Labrador Retriever
  2. German Shepherd
  3. Golden Retriever
  4. French Bulldog
  5. Bulldog

The French Bulldog jumped two spots from No. 6 to No. 4, and it knocked the beagle out of the top five for the first time since 1998.
