The Clean Cut: Katy Perry releases 2016 Rio Olympic Anthem video
Posted July 19, 2016
Perry said she is a “super fan” of the Olympics, and has thought about “Rise” for years. She is in the process of creating a new album and felt this song needed to be released sooner than the rest of the album.
"I was inspired to finish it now rather than save it for (my upcoming) album because of the overall mood of the world today," she said in a video she sent to TODAY. "Now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite. I know that together we can rise above the fear — in our country, and around the world."
The new song represents the strength and unity the Olympic games bring to the world. The video includes clips from the games in the past, featuring both moments of joyful victories and heartbreaking trials being overcome.
"I can't think of a better example coming up than the Olympic athletes, as they gather together in Rio with their strength and fearlessness to remind us how we all can come together with the resolve to be the best we can be," Perry said in the video. "Let's be inspired. Let's heal. Let's unite and rise."
Perry tweeted about the song on Twitter, with the caption “TOGETHER WE #RISE.”
A version of the video will be shown in 20,000 movie theaters preceding the Opening Ceremonies of the Olympics on Aug. 5.
